A ginormous collage for the pleasure of your eyes!
YES there is a real human girl in there. It is not a doll. Although that would be pretty cool. This was my and ~poofmongoose's project for the 5th Annual Kelowna Wearable Art Gala. It's sort of like a fashion/performance show with each entry being some form of 'wearable art' and performing for a couple of minutes. This year there were 44 entries, we went second-last and made it into the top 5 for viewer's choice! It's a pretty big fancy event with a big party afterwards and it's 19+ and tickets are quite expensive. We've always wanted to go and weren't old enough so we figured we might as well be a part of it. Nobody questioned our ages... Anyway, the project is called Schism. It has two 'fronts', she floated out on stage from behind a shadow screen all creepy-like and then turned around dramatically, revealing the white side and white flowers, and then walked back more gracefully. The music we used was Syunikiss by Malice Mizer. Unfortunately all of our music and lighting cues were horribly, horribly off (out of our hands) but our model did an amazing job and if you didn't know anything was amiss it would have been fine. When she turned around the whole audience gasped, which was great. I was behind stage busying myself with having a tantrum over the missed cues. The costume itself was constructed by Alison (pink dreads) and I (black & teal hair) equally and is modeled by our gorgeous and talented friend Cat (obviously wearing costume). We chose our model carefully and she was perfect. We made the wig and attached painted masks, and made all other costume components, including a boned corset, ascot, clear PVC crinoline (never again!), crown, and bustles. The model wore 1.5" nails and 8" mirrored heels and tights for extra shininess and spookiness. We also painted her. She was supposed to resemble a creepy doll somewhat. And from the back, it certainly was super creepy. Success! I felt like one of my drawings had come to life. That's about it. This was a huuuuuge time-suck but it was indeed worth it. I spent the first week of my spring break sick and the second sick and working on this. |
